Church History and Growth PDF Print E-mail

In 1953, a small group of people began to meet in homes for Sunday school and Bible study. That same year they began meeting for worship and called their first pastor. Ground breaking for the first building was in 1956. Since that time there have been two additions to the original building. The first addition (1965) enlarged the sanctuary and provided much needed classroom space. The more recent addition (1975) includes the sanctuary overflow, multi-purpose room, youth room, nurseries, offices, and several classrooms.

When the Evangelical Free Church of Wauconda began, Wauconda was a sleepy rural resort town known for its beaches and apple orchard. The church's growth and transformation has kept pace with the community, now a suburb on the northwestern edge of the Chicago suburban sprawl. Today, the Church ministers to families primarily in Wauconda and Island Lake, but also in McHenry, Ingleside, Fox Lake, Lake Zurich, Mundelein, Tower Lakes, and Hawthorn Woods.

But more important than the physical and numerical growth is the spiritual growth of our Church family. Over the years, the depth of our worship and service to God has grown as well. We have continually added ministries to encourage spiritual growth in the lives of believers and to reach out to those who don't know Christ in our community and around the world. Over the years we have been blessed with godly pastors who have encouraged us to apply Biblical principles to our daily lives.

In 1992, the Church adopted a new structure for pastoral leadership - a pastoral team with no one having the title of senior pastor. The Bible emphasizes that the leaders are to be servants of all and supports a leadership that is a plurality of mature leaders of which the pastors are but one part. From 1992 until 2007, our pastors led the church together as co-laborers with elected leaders, equipping the saints for the work of the ministry.

In 2006, our Church began to consider reinstating the position of Senior Pastor to provide increased focus and direction for the pastoral staff.  In 2007, the Church membership voted to adopt the Senior Pastor structure.  A search for a Senior Pastor is underway and we are confident of God's direction and provision in this regard.  Regardless of the leadership structure, the focus of all we do continues to be to develop disciples who are obedient to Jesus Christ for the glory of God .

We are affiliated with the Evangelical Free Church of America.
